Brass Reflections is new on the music scene in NEPA although its members have long been involved in music performance and education locally. The group, mostly retired music teachers, has been practicing together since the Summer of 2015. They currently have an extensive repertoire that includes Wedding Music, Broadway, Classical favorites from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic Eras. They can also arrange and perform special requests! In their short time together, they have performed as Guests for the PMEA Holiday Series at the Viewmont Mall, The Scranton Antique Automobile Association Christmas Party, St Ignatius Church in Kingston, Sacred Heart Church in Scranton and the Erie Lackawanna Historic Dining Car Restoration Society “Holiday Express Train Excursion”. Barrie Bartle, Trumpet, is a retired music educator having taught in Missouri, Colorado and most recently the Delaware Valley School District, Milford, PA. He has degrees from Evangel College, Springfield, MO and Marywood College, Scranton. Most notable trumpet instructors: Rei Christopher (John Philip Sousa Band), Bryan Goff (Air Force Falconaires) and Ken Brader (Philadelphia Pops, Glenn Miller Orchestra and Phil Woods Jazz Band). His teaching experience includes general, vocal and instrumental music K-12. He was also the Minister of Music at Hamlin Pentecostal Assembly for 23 years.
Mary Ann Yonchiuk, Trumpet, Plays with the Northern Tier Symphony & NTSO Brass ensemble. She has studied with Julliard School Trumpet instructor, Robert Helmacy. Mary Ann is an active church and pit orchestra musician. She retired after teaching in the Scranton School District and has been a PIAA District 2 and College Volleyball official for 25 years. She has performed National Anthem as trumpet soloist for the "Railriders" multiple times.
Wayne Smith, Euphonium, first learned to play an instrument as a young student in the North Pocono School District. He earned his teaching degree at Mansfield University and taught 35 years in the Dunmore School District where he taught Elementary General and Instrumental Music, Middle School Instrumental and High School Concert, Marching, and Jazz bands. For the past five years he has served as Assistant Director in the Performance Music Department at the University of Scranton. He is a member of the Scranton Brass Orchestra and Brass Concepts.
Raymond Stedenfeld, Tuba and Trombone, is a freelance music teacher and brass performer. He performs with the Northerntier Symphony, Brass Concepts, Scranton Brass Orchestra, as well as with local theaters and community bands. He maintains a private studio and directs the PA Homeschool Band. He recently retired as Music Department Chair and Director of Bands for the Western Wayne School District. He is a graduate of Marywood University. Ray is a member of the National Association for Music Education and Pennsylvania Music Educators Association where he served 2 terms as Local President and 2 terms on the PMEA State Board. He was also a recipient of the PMEA Citation of Excellence.
